Frequently asked questions

Switching to tallow based products may seem overwhelming at first. Take your time, look around, and learn all there is to know about us.

DOES TALLOW SMELL LIKE BEEF?

Leaf fat from grass-fed & grass-finished cows that has been properly rendered and purified should have a very mild scent. In our Purity blend, there are no added essential oils so the scent may be more noticeable. However, in our blends that contain essential oils the smell of the tallow will be negligible to most people.

ARE YOUR PRODUCTS SOLD BY VOLUME OR WEIGHT?

The answer is both. For our whipped products, when air is introduced into the mixture it increases the volume of the product and there is simply not enough space in the jar to accomodate a full 2, 4, or 8 ounces of product. For this reason, the whipped products are measured to a standard weight and piped to fill the volume of the jar. Each weight is measured to be within .02 ounces of our standard weight.

WHAT IS THE SHELF LIFE?

When kept at room temperature tallow has a shelf life of six months or more. Many of customers are still using their product one year after purchase. Keep in mind anything that is on your hands (i.e., bacteria, dirt, water) that gets introduced into your jar may shorten its lifespan. We recommend using dry, clean hands when handling the tallow in your jar.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WHIPPED TALLOW AND A BALM?

Balms tend to be better for smaller areas of the body, think of them more as a spot treatment or in areas where you really want to work the tallow in. With clean hands, rub a small amount of balm between your palms to warm it up and make it more spreadable. We feel that whipped tallows are better for larger areas of the body, because they are softer and more spreadable. Some customers simply prefer a softer texture. For whipped tallows, with clean hands apply a small amount directly to an area of your choosing.

MY PET ATE MY TALLOW, WHAT SHOULD I DO?

Please keep your tallow products out of reach of your pets! Some essential oils are known to be toxic to animals when ingested. Therefore, if a tallow blend that contains essential oils is ingested by a pet you should monitor symptoms and consult your veternarian on steps to take.

HOW DO YOU USE IT?

Honestly, anyway you like. For use as: cleanser, moisturizer, diaper rash cream, shaving cream, burns, hair conditioner, make-up remover, eczema & psoriasis relief, acne, after-sun care, yeast and fungal infection, cradle cap, rashes, TSW, chafing, nipple butter, age spots, etc. The possibilities are really endless.

WHAT SIZE DO I NEED?

Tallow is special in that a little goes a long way! A 4 oz. balm jar will likely last a long time since only small amounts are used at a time. A 4 oz. whipped jar would be a good size for a face cream, intermittent use, or spot treatment for troublesome areas. Many of our customers are able to use a 4 oz. jar for an entire year depending on their usage. An 8 oz. whipped jar would be better suited for everyday use, when using as a total body moisturizer, or for when your friends and family keep asking to try!

WHY IS THIS JAR NOT AS ‘WHIPPED’?

Be mindful that tallow is a product that can vary depending on the time of year the cow was harvested, the cow's diet on pasture, breed, etc. All of our blends are made the exact same way, with the exact same ingredients, every time. Differences in texture or how much air we are able to whip into the mixture from batch to batch MAY vary. Air volume may also be lost in transit due to temperature changes and package handling. However, the benefits will always be the same.

CAN TALLOW BE USED ON MY PETS?

Yes. HOWEVER, some essential oils are known to be toxic to animals when ingested. Our Purity blend only contains beef tallow and organic olive oil, therefore we consider this to be the safest blend to be used on pets. We encourage you to use your own judgment and critical thinking, and as always you can consult your veternarian.

SINCE TALLOW IS A FAT, IS IT GOING TO CLOG MY PORES?

The short answer is NO. Tallow is incredibly close in composition to human skin which makes it extremely compatible with our skin cells. Some people may experience what we call a transition period when they first start using a natural product like tallow instead of a synthetic product, and this is normal. If you do experience a breakout when you first start using our products, be reassured that is not the tallow clogging your pores. In addition to the tallow, the ingredients that we use are helpful in turning over new skin cells which can cause old skin buildup to be pushed to the surface. This is known as skin purging, and will be a temporary adjustment. We encourage you to be patient and stick it out, because we promise the results on the other side are worth it.

I HAVE REALLY SENSITIVE SKIN, WHICH PRODUCT SHOULD I USE?

Because tallow is so compatible with our skin it tends to be really well tolerated, even for those individuals who have sensitive skin. When you check out our product page there will be a detailed description of each product and which blends we recommend for different skin conditions. Our most gentle blends, however, are Purity, Simplicity, and Divine Simplicity.

MY ORDER MELTED IN THE HEAT, WHAT DO I DO NOW?

Because we do not use any preservatives in our products, they are subject to melting at prolonged high temperature exposure.

TALLOW BALMS:

If melting does occur, put your jar in the fridge to cool it down and solidify. Take the jar out and allow it to come back to room temperature before use. There will be no difference in texture.

WHIPPED TALLOW:

Some whipped blends are more susceptible to melting than others. Once the product has been melted it will need to be re-whipped to obtain the light, airy consistency again. If it arrives melted and/or has lost of some it’s air volume due to heat, you can empty the contents of the jar into a bowl and allow it to cool. Whip with a hand or stand mixer and then it can be scooped back into the jar. Or, you can use the steps indicated above for balms and use it with that texture instead.

No matter the texture, you will still get all the healing and hydrating goodness of the tallow.
